University of South Carolina School of Law

Master of Environmental Law and Policy/Juris Doctor (MELP/JD)

Course of Study

The Master of Environmental Law and Policy/Juris Doctor (MELP/JD) program requires three years at South Carolina and one summer at VLS. Students are required to meet the American Bar Association (ABA) requirements for attendance and curriculum at South Carolina, and satisfy all South Carolina JD graduation requirements. Students are also required to satisfy all VLS MELP graduation requirements.

Through a combination of transfer credits and an environmental placement that provides internship credit, South Carolina and VLS allow students who meet degree requirements at both schools to receive a dual degree of JD and MELP within the three-year term of the JD degree.

Students interested in the VLS/USC dual degree program are required to apply separately to each school. Students usually apply to VLS during their first year at USC. Each school admits students according to its own criteria for admission. Joint applicants may be discussed and coordinated by admissions officials at both schools, when appropriate.

Students admitted to the MELP/JD program are assigned joint program advisors in each school. These advisors assist with curriculum planning and similar matters.

Each school applies its own grading system to the students in the program. Students must be in good academic standing at both schools to remain in the program.

MELP/JD dual degree students may attend graduation at both schools. After completing all the degree requirements for both degrees, students will receive a diploma from each school. If a student fails to complete the dual degree program or withdraws from it, the student must complete the full program at either school before receiving a degree from that school.
