New York Times Discusses Gay Discrimination Lawsuit with Prof. Greg Johnson

July 20, 2011

The New York Times talked to Vermont Law School Professor Greg Johnson for a July 20 story about a lesbian couple who is suing a Vermont inn, claiming it refused to host their fall wedding reception because of their sexual orientation.Image of Greg Johnson

Johnson, whose expertise includes gay and lesbian legal issues and sexual orientation and the law, told the Times that the suit could set a precedent as more states legalize same-sex marriage. Currently, same-sex marriage is legal in six states and the District of Columbia, all of which protect gay men and lesbians in their public-accommodations laws.

"I think this case could set an important precedent not only for Vermont but for other states with marriage equality," he said, noting that lawsuits like this are rare.
