Gary Brooks is a graduate of Dartmouth College (A.B. Summa Cum Laude, 1970) and Yale Law School (J.D. 1976). A member of the Bars of both New Hampshire and Vermont, he has practiced law in the Upper Valley for 40 years, specializing in trusts and estates and corporate law. He is currently Director of the General Practice Program and Assistant Professor of Law at Vermont Law School, where he regularly teaches courses in Commercial Transactions and Estate Planning.
For more than 25 years, Mr. Brooks was a director of The King Arthur Flour Company, Inc., a 100% ESOP company with its corporate headquarters in Norwich, Vermont. He helped guide the company through a three-stage ESOP conversion, and served in varying capacities on the Board, including as Chair of the Finance/Audit and Governance Committees, and as Vice-Chair of the Board. He has also served on the Board of Directors of Resource Systems Group, Inc., another 100% ESOP company with offices in White River Junction, Vermont, as Vice Chair of the Board and as Chair of its Governance Committee.
Mr. Brooks was an original founder of Opera North, and has been a board member and a chorus member in numerous Opera North productions. He has been a Trustee of The Montshire Museum of Science and served as Chair of the Board of Trustees of the museum from 2002-2004. He has also been a trustee of The Sharon Academy, the Sports Venue Foundation, and a Deacon of the Norwich Congregational Church, and is active in numerous community organizations.
Prior to beginning his law career, Mr. Brooks worked in Washington as a legislative aide to the late Congressman Dante Fascell (D-Fla.), and as Assistant Dean of the College at Dartmouth College (1972-74).
Mr. Brooks is a current Director and past President of the Dartmouth Lawyers Association, an organization of Dartmouth alumni involved in the legal profession, with 1800 members from 44 states and more than 20 foreign countries. In 1999, he was given the Dartmouth Alumni Award for service to Dartmouth College, including as Class of 1970 President, Reunion Chairman, and member of the Alumni Council.
Mr. Brooks and his wife, Barbara Duncan, who retired as Executive Director of the Catamount Earth Institute, live in Hanover, New Hampshire and Fairlee, Vermont.
