Please join the Environmental Law Center for the next installment in the virtual Current Issues in Animal Law lecture series. Steven Wise of the Nonhuman Rights Project will present "The Struggle to Gain Legal Rights for Nonhuman Animals."

Nonhuman animals have always been considered “things" that lack the capacity for any legal rights. But a movement is growing to secure fundamental rights for nonhuman animals. Steven Wise is founder and president of the Nonhuman Rights Project, an organization leading this movement through a long-term litigation campaign in the US and throughout the world. Join Professor Wise to learn more about the NhRP's lawsuits, which demand that autonomous nonhuman animal clients be seen as legal "persons" who possess the capacity for the common law right to bodily liberty protected by habeas corpus.

Free and open to the public, this event will be livestreamed at vermontlaw.edu/live and on Facebook.
