Biography

John D. Miller, Jr., is a dynamic and collaborative leader with a passion for helping institutions of higher education and non-profit organizations advance their mission through problem solving, team building, and forward-thinking innovation.

As Vermont Law School’s former Vice President for Enrollment Management, Marketing and Communications, Miller led and contributed to several mission-critical initiatives, including revenue generation, marketing and communications, technology implementation and adoption, external, community and board relations, and institutional change.

Miller currently services as the Director of Legal Education Consulting Services at the Law School Admission Council and is an Adjunct Professor of Law at VLS, teaching courses in the emerging restorative justice field.

Prior to earning his law degree, he worked professionally in the hospitality and retail management fields for companies like Marriott and Starbucks. It was this core mix of customer service, business operations, and sales that became the springboard for his success today.

Miller’s tenure at VLS started in 2009 as the Associate Director of Admissions. His career progressed to the Director of Admissions and Communications, Assistant Dean of Admissions, and the Associate Dean for Enrollment and Marketing. He has served on various committees during his tenure including the Strategic Planning Committee, President and Dean Search Committee (twice), Staff Representative to the Board of Trustees, Healthcare Committee, Staff Handbook Committee, Ad Hoc Committee on Legal Education, Placement and Bar Committee, and the Safety Committee. In his professional capacity, he has served on various committees for the American Association of Law Schools (AALS), the Law School Admission Council (LSAC), and the National Association for Graduate Enrollment Management.

Professor Miller’s interest and experience with restorative justice began with his undergraduate studies at Hudson Valley Community College where he received his Associate in Applied Science in Criminal Justice. He then went on to receive his Bachelor’s degree in Law and Society from The Sage Colleges. During this time he interned for Albany County Drug Treatment Court and completed the New York State Mediation Training. He went on to receive his law degree from VLS, where he served as a student clinician at the South Royalton Legal Clinic, conducting research on community restorative justice. Miller was his class commencement speaker, recipient of the Law Student Ethics Award, the Student Bar Association Student Pro Bono Service Award, and the Max Kempner Service Award.

He is a restorative justice practitioner and a current volunteer at the Montpelier Community Justice Center where he serves on COSA teams and Restorative Impact Panels. COSA, or Circles of Support and Accountability, is a restorative reentry program that helps participants reintegrate into the community after a period of incarceration. COSA teams provide varying levels of support to help manage everyday challenges. He routinely participates in trainings related to restorative justice and annually with the Vermont Department of Corrections.

Professor Miller teaches two required courses in the restorative justice master’s and certificate program, which can also be taken for JD credit. Origins, Evolution, and Critical Issues in Restorative Justice is a class that examines the foundational theories and indigenous roots of restorative justice, while exploring the practical application of restorative justice techniques across multiple disciplines. Communications, Advocacy, and Leadership provides students tools to become effective leaders and skilled advocates. Students create a fictional non-profit and walk through a series of iterative exercises from concept, governance, marketing, funding, lobbying, and more. He teaches these classes in both residential and online formats.

Off campus, Miller is the president of the board of directors at the North Country Animal League, which is a limited-access animal shelter that promotes compassionate relationships between humans and animals.
