Biography
Anna Saxman graduated from Vermont Law School, magna cum laude, in 1985. She was the articles editor of the Vermont Law Review. Following graduation, she clerked with Justice Louis Peck of the Vermont Supreme Court. She was an associate attorney with Langrock Sperry until she joined the Defender General’s office, where she is an appellate defender, the director of training, and the deputy defender general.

She represented the Women’s Section of the Vermont Bar on the Board of Bar Managers for many years and was president of the Vermont Bar Association from 2003-04. She was appointed by former Vermont Gov. Madeleine Kunin to serve on the Gender Bias Task Force and has served on numerous Vermont Supreme Court committees, including the Equal Access to Justice Coalition and the Justice for Children Task Force. She is a member of the Criminal Rules Committee.
Professor Saxman currently teaches in the Criminal Law Clinic at VLS. She has taught at VLS since 1995 and has taught Criminal Law, Current Issues in Constitutional Law, Mental Health Law, Evidence Labs, and Criminal Practice and Procedure. She is particularly interested in the intersection of criminal law and mental health law, and has published two articles on the subject in Psychology, Public Policy and Law. She was the recipient of a U.S. Department of Justice grant to improve the representation of mentally disabled defendants. She has presented numerous seminars on the issues for University of Vermont and Dartmouth-Hitchcock departments of psychiatry, the Vermont and New Hampshire Psychological associations, and the State of Georgia Judiciary. She has presented many seminars on criminal law for the Vermont Bar Association as well as the Green Mountain Criminal Defense Institute.
