Alex Frank has worked in and with state and local justice systems across the country at the intersection of restorative justice and antiracist policy change with an eye towards addressing the ways in which our history of colonialism, cultural genocide, and enslavement manifests within the legal system. Her work ensures all efforts are in close partnership with people most impacted by mass incarceration – especially currently and formerly incarcerated people – including centering their resilience, cultural identity, and human dignity.
Professor Frank teaches youth justice at Vermont Law and Graduate School. She also works as Director of Root Solutions for Public Safety at the national non-profit organization Race Forward. Her career has included serving as Assistant Commissioner at the New York City Department of Corrections at Rikers Island Jail Complex, Project Director and Co-Founder of the Restoring Promise Initiative at the Vera Institute of Justice, and working at the Annie E. Casey Foundation within their Juvenile Justice Strategy Group, among other roles. Professor Frank holds a Masters in Social Work from New York University, and a Bachelors in Holistic Psychology from Lesley University. Professor Frank’s lived experience with the justice system and passion for history, politics, social movement theory, and racial justice drive her passion for this work and commitment to being a lifelong learner.
