The Environmental Law Center at Vermont Law School will welcome Holly Doremus, a leading scholar and teacher in the areas of environmental law, natural resources law, and law and science, as the honorary speaker at the sixth annual Colloquium on Environmental Scholarship, Saturday, Oct. 3, at VLS.

Doremus is a professor of environmental regulation, associate dean for faculty development and research, and co-director of the Center for Law, Energy and the Environment at Berkeley Law, University of California. She brings a strong background in life sciences to her work.

"We are pleased to welcome Holly to Vermont Law School," said VLS Professor Hillary Hoffmann, director of the colloquium. "She has demonstrated a commitment to interdisciplinary teaching and scholarship at the intersection of science and the law. We look forward to her keynote address as well as to hearing from our many colleagues and friends who will present their work during the Colloquium on Environmental Scholarship."

Doremus earned a PhD in plant physiology from Cornell University and was a post-doctoral associate at the University of Missouri before transitioning to law. In addition to her law school teaching experience, she has taught in the graduate ecology program at UC Davis, in the College of Natural Resources at UC Berkeley, and at the Bren School of Environmental Science and Management at UC Santa Barbara. She was a principal investigator on two major National Science Foundation Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) grants and on a multidisciplinary grant addressing hydropower relicensing in California.

The annual Colloquium on Environmental Scholarship at Vermont Law School offers environmental law scholars the opportunity to present their works-in-progress, to get feedback from their colleagues, and to meet and interact with those who teach and research in areas related to environmental and natural resources law. More than 60 environmental scholars from across the country will participate in the colloquium, which is not open to the public. VLS will serve farm-to-table meals during the colloquium, and participants will have the opportunity to hike Quechee Gorge and tour the Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS) and surrounding trails.
