This summer, Swan Society—a student group dedicated to birding at Vermont Law and Graduate School—established the nation’s first chapter of National Audubon Society on the campus of a law school. Under the Audubon on Campus Program, student organizations gain access to resources and leadership-training opportunities, engage in yearly conservation actions, become eligible to apply for grants for projects and initiatives, and can create meaningful change on and off campus.

The purpose of Swan Society, also known as the Audubon VLGS Chapter, is “to encourage non-consumptive appreciation for avifauna [or birds] and the habitats upon which avifauna depend.” In pursuit of this purpose, Swan Society aims to regularly host birding excursions—events where students and the public can observe and record birds in their habitats. Swan Society also aims to host one educational event per semester, as well as other activities like building birdhouses. In short, Swan Society hopes to encourage students and the public to support their local birds.
