Aviance Brown advocates zealously for voting rights and criminal justice reform in federal and state courts in NC. She teaches Race, Law and Restorative Justice. Aviance obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte then went on to obtain her Juris Doctorate degree from North Carolina Central University School of Law. While in law school Aviance served as the President of the Bar Association, Vice President of the Civil Rights Society, and competed nationally as a member of the Moot Court Board.
After graduating Aviance went on to handle complex civil litigation matters as a mid-sized defense firm. Subsequently, she opened a boutique firm to take on criminal defense cases throughout several rural counties in NC. Aviance made it a practice to handle cases with both a racial equity and restorative justice lens.
She serves on the Community Engagement leadership team of Restorative Justice Durham where she facilitates trainings for upcoming restorative justice practitioners, court actors and community leaders. She also volunteers as a case facilitator where she practices her philosophy that each community conflict that is handled in the community rather than in the courts offers a fair shot at true justice and healing.
