Mayland brings expertise in renewable energy development to Energy Clinic

SOUTH ROYALTON, Vermont (Oct. 10, 2024) — Vermont Law and Graduate School (VLGS) has announced the appointment of Kirt Mayland as visiting professor at the Institute for Energy and the Environment (IEE).

Mayland, who received his LLM in Environmental Law from Vermont Law and Graduate School in 2005, brings a wealth of experience in renewable energy development and environmental law to the school. Before joining VLGS, he was affiliated with the Connecticut Institute for Resilience & Climate Adaptation (CIRCA) at the University of Connecticut, where he taught renewable energy law, land use law and environmental law.

His legal career includes roles as in-house counsel at Barron Partners, Soltas Energy and Penn Energy Renewables and as an environmental attorney for Trout Unlimited. Mayland is also the president of Taconic Range Energy & Environment, a renewable energy development consulting firm.

“We are thrilled to welcome Professor Mayland to the IEE’s Energy Clinic,” Mark James, interim director of the Institute for Energy and the Environment, said. “His experience and background, particularly with solar energy, hydroelectric and energy storage, will provide VLGS students with unique opportunities to engage in real-world projects that emphasize both environmental and social justice.”

In this role, Mayland will work closely with students in the Energy Clinic, helping develop community-based renewable energy projects. Current projects include a solar energy initiative in Tunbridge, Vermont, and projects in Resident-Owned Communities (ROCS) in New Hampshire that focus on making renewable energy accessible to low-income and mobile home park residents.

“Vermont Law and Graduate School played a pivotal role in shaping my transition from corporate law to environmental advocacy, and I’m excited to return here to help students navigate similar journeys,” Mayland said. “I look forward to sharing my experiences in renewable energy development with students and helping them tackle complex legal and policy issues that have a real-world impact.”

Mayland graduated from Dartmouth College and was a Fulbright Scholar in Monterrey, Mexico, where he received a Master’s in Finance from the Instituto Tecnologico de Estudios Superiores. He received his J.D. from the University of Connecticut, where he was a member of the Connecticut Law Review and an LLM in Environmental Law from Vermont Law and Graduate School.
